Battambang: Almost non-stop rain in Battambang has resulted in severe flooding, with nearly 3,000 homes damaged. Most of the properties swamped are along the province’s rivers. The Provincial Administration says a major increase in the water level of the Sangke River is responsible for the flooding. It has also affected some areas of Pailin province, while in Banteay Meanchey, residents are being advised to be extra vigilant.

Residents along Battambang’s rivers and streams have been warned to prepare for the worst, with the Sangke River rising rapidly. It is one of the main rivers in the province. It flows through six districts and 27 communes before draining into the Tonlé Sap Lake. With almost continuous rain since Friday, the river has overflown. A total of 2,948 homes in 11 communes have been affected. Flooding has also affected parts of Pailin province.

Meanwhile, in Banteay Meanchey, the Governor of Poipet Municipality, Keat Hul, has led the Municipal-Sangkat Working Group on an inspection of various districts. Water levels have increased in the districts of Malai, O’Chrov, Thmor Puok as well as in Poipet City itself. Governor Hul has called on people living in low-lying areas to be careful and monitor water levels regularly. Parents are advised to keep an eye on their children to avoid any tragedies.
